Autism is a lifelong disability which affects social and communication skills and impacts on a person's imagination and flexibility of thought.
Autism affects the way an individual relates to people, situations and the immediate environment.
No known cure exists for the condition, but there are many ways to assist a person (with autism) towards living a fulfilled life.
The term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is commonly used because different degrees of severity are found in people diagnosed with the condition. Around 25% of people with ASD will have an accompanying learning disability. Some people with ASD will have average or above average intelligence, they are likely to be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome.
Regardless of an individual’s level of functioning, all individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder will have problems in the core skill areas of Social Communication, Social Skills and Social Imagination.
